All My Favorite People Are Broken

Believe me, my heart should know.

30 Jan

This morning at our weekly meeting for Floodgate staff, Gary Molander dropped this thought on us. He said, (something like)

“Maybe God is not concerned about picking up the pieces of our lives, and putting us back together. Maybe He wants us to be broken. After all, it’s the broken people He uses to accomplish his work.”

I think this is a beautiful thought. I agree whole-heartedly. Too often we are so concerned about coming off like we have it all together, rather than letting our true state, our brokeness speak into the lives of others. I think most of us would agree that while it’s nice to have advice from an expert who seems to have arrived at the place we want to get, it’s often the words of someone who’s candid enough to reveal their short-comings, that help us see ourselves in a truer light.

Of course, this song by Over The Rhine came to mind right away. If you haven’t heard it, do yourself a favor and stop what you’re doing and listen. It’s becoming more and more, a resounding theme in my psyche, my relationships, and my art.

Also, do yourself another favor and read Gary’s blog. Hopefully he’ll have even more to say on this subject, but if not, there is a ton of other great stuff there you don’t want to miss.

All my favorite people are broken
Believe me, my heart should know
Some prayers are better left unspoken
I just want to hold you and let the rest go

All my friends are part saint and part sinner
We lean on each other, try to rise above
We are not afraid to admit we are all still beginners
We are all late bloomers when it comes to love

All my favorite people are broken
Believe me, my heart should know
Awful believers, skeptical dreamers, step forward
You can stay right here, you don’t have to go

Is each wound you’ve received just a burdensome gift
It gets so hard to lift yourself up off the ground
But the poet says we must praise a mutilated world
We’re all working the graveyard shift
You might as well sing along

Cause all my favorite people are broken
Believe me, my heart should know
As for your tender heart, this world’s going to rip it wide open,
It aint gonna be pretty, but you’re not alone

All my favorite people are broken
Believe me, my heart should know
Awful believers, skeptical dreamers, you’re welcome
Yeah, you’re safe right here, you don’t have to go

Cause all my favorite people are broken
Believe me, I should know
Some prayers are better left unspoken
I just want to hold you and let the rest go
